Robin says: Earning It

Robin write clever words, once again, this time on success, and why role-play it better than other fiction.

in role playing sessions, obstacles overcome or information provided without effort are a glaring hallmark of railroading. After the inevitable info dump of the scenario set-up has been dispensed with, players do not want to be passive observers of a story unfolding around them. They want to make it happen through, if not their choices, the active exercise of the various abilities on their character sheets. The form demands protagonist-driven plotting and earned success.

He's absolutely right and I find it remarkable that he is one of the first (at least I hear it for the first time), the count stand up not film, series or novel as a role model (ARS here, not even as there is a other focus), but very clearly reverse that role play has its own strengths.

Mr. Chan, you have an old fan of the Hong Kong film's heart bleed.

Art of Theft:

Playing the wonderful freeware games Art of Theft last me the lack of momentum for my campaign has been Istanbul. It will be about professional thieves and it is easy for me, I will write a custom RPG-for-the-campaign.

I am now thinking to make what is to be noted for such thieves role play everything. Basically replaced the heist the dungeon. In this regard, AoT: Istanbul inspired by Shadowrun, but from my long experience, I would like SR-try some of the problems of Shadowrun not to commit.

example, I will urge the traditional RPG battle focus to the edge. How To
extensive rules for all aspects give around a break-in. Beginning with detailed rules for collecting information and spying, on detailed rules for the bypassing of security measures to extensive rules for acting and fraud.

also should not be neglected life in the underworld of crime. I imagine the master thieves, as an integral part of the Underworld. Although the coup earn their money, but much of their time to spend to live a life and to network in the demimonde.

's see how it develops.

Istanbul Istanbul at night

Istanbul Dämmerung Well the working title we must work more. Has it ever been anyone noticed that with "... at night" and "... in the shadows" already almost all the juicy possibilities have been exhausted to a location in Darkness to dress?

My campaign will revolve under the existing state of things the organized crime in Istanbul. It's about drugs, arms and human trafficking. Afghan drug lords, Russian traffickers, West European arms smugglers. Discos, go-go girls, prostitution, red light, Arbeiterslums, Gecekondu, tanks, steam, yachts, mosques.

With Bonds on Shadowrun I will support for as hand, that the SCs occur as nobodies in the Organized Crime and work your way up. At first some small dirty job, it should go for it deeper and deeper into the swamp.

Gradually, they are trained to be clear, a bond in Urban Arcana, that in the world of organized Rule as being more powerful Mafia crime bosses. Aggravating factor for the SCs, it will be there, that they must limit themselves differently than in Shadowrun or Urban Arcana alone in their worldly skills. No magic, no supernatural abilities.

role-playing in the New

Originally published at Sven's wordsmiths . Please leave any comments there.

The old year is gone, that new already begun. What is on your agenda?

I am craving right now, once again missing after role play an Asian setting, whether or Triad wuxia action, only the right system for me right now.

L5R is of course always a Try, but unfortunately there are some things in the setting that made me a little push off, as the bad character of limited choice, particularly in relation to the Splash. The Rokugan metaplot va-vise is not exactly a revelation from the Lord, will not be mentioned.

In NoPress-Anthology, which I then won the still-GroFaFo Challenge, there is Pagoda. Pagoda reads a bit like L5R stripped. certainly worth a try, although I am not the magic appears to offset the rest, but basically you can do it fixed fast. However, I've got no experience of how well the double-triple-system. (A measure of success by the number of identical cubes. Appears to me a bit cumbersome.)

Kindred of the East - has for years been in my shelf, but so far little used. Vampires are now not really my thing, even if it is Asian. (I'm probably not emo enough.) However, Kote but wonderfully describes a mystical version of the modern Asia. So at least one consideration would it bring out because of the background again.

One option that I would come to mind right now would be to take Kote SR4. They throw magic, Cyberware and matrix out and keep only the Ki-forces to simulate wuxia action. If in fact several:

  • SR4 available as a German rules
  • Fast, reasonably balanced system with a focus that goes strongly in the direction of the commission, including the mechanisms for reputation and footwork holds
  • Guns, Guns, Guns (which are only adjusted to the current state should not)
