Robin says: Earning It

Robin write clever words, once again, this time on success, and why role-play it better than other fiction.

in role playing sessions, obstacles overcome or information provided without effort are a glaring hallmark of railroading. After the inevitable info dump of the scenario set-up has been dispensed with, players do not want to be passive observers of a story unfolding around them. They want to make it happen through, if not their choices, the active exercise of the various abilities on their character sheets. The form demands protagonist-driven plotting and earned success.

He's absolutely right and I find it remarkable that he is one of the first (at least I hear it for the first time), the count stand up not film, series or novel as a role model (ARS here, not even as there is a other focus), but very clearly reverse that role play has its own strengths.
